12 of the Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in NSW

Founders Note: “Fun fact: Bentley was not a fan of the beach the first few times he went. He absolutely hated the water and would bark at anyone who got even close. Then one day he found a dead jellyfish and refused to let it go. We ended up dragging him into the water to try and get it off him, and in that moment, something changed. His love for the jellyfish turned into a love for the ocean, and from that day on, he has been a true water dog. Luckily it all ended well, and now I have a pup who can’t get enough of the sea. So today I wanted to share 11 of our favourite beaches to voyage with Bentley”

Why NSW is a Beach Lover’s Dream for Dogs

From Sydney’s northern surf breaks to Byron’s relaxed shores, New South Wales is full of beautiful dog friendly beaches. Whether you’re chasing sunrise swims or a weekend road trip, there’s a stretch of coastline your pup will love.

Here are 12 of the best beaches for dogs across NSW, from local gems to bucket list coastal escapes.

1. Greenhills Beach, Cronulla

Location: South Sydney

Vibe: Coastal energy with a local community feel

Why We Love It: The only official off leash beach in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. Dogs can run free before 10am and after 4pm daily. The waves are gentle enough for confident swimmers, and parking is easy near Mitchell Road.

Tip: Bring plenty of water as there’s minimal shade.

2. Sirius Cove, Mosman

Location: Lower North Shore, Sydney

Vibe: Calm harbour views with shady picnic spots

Why We Love It: Perfect for small dogs or first time swimmers. The parkland behind the beach is leash free and ideal for picnics. The calm water makes it one of Sydney’s most peaceful dog beaches.

Best Time: Weekday mornings when it’s quiet.

3. Rowland Reserve, Bayview (Pittwater)

Location: Northern Beaches

Vibe: Social and spacious

Why We Love It: A huge open park that meets a sandy foreshore where dogs can play, swim, and mingle. There’s a dog wash station nearby and plenty of parking.

Bonus: Grab coffee from The Boathouse Shelly Beach afterwards.

4. Clontarf Reserve, Clontarf

Location: Near Spit Bridge, Sydney

Vibe: Relaxed family friendly beach

Why We Love It: Calm waters, shady spots, and a beautiful coastal walk nearby. Dogs can go off leash on the sandy foreshore west of the boat ramp.

Tip: Bring a picnic blanket and stay for sunset.

5. Silver Beach, Kurnell

Location: Near Botany Bay

Vibe: Quiet and local

Why We Love It: One of Sydney’s hidden treasures. The off leash area between Bonna Point Reserve and the third jetty is great for running and paddling.

Best For: Dogs that love gentle waves and long sandy runs.

6. North Avoca Beach, Central Coast

Location: Central Coast, near Terrigal

Vibe: Relaxed surf town energy

Why We Love It: A long stretch of golden sand with a dedicated off leash section at the northern end. Perfect for dogs who love to chase a ball and splash through the shallows. The beach is patrolled in summer and surrounded by laid back coastal cafés.

Stay Nearby: Pet friendly stays are easy to find around Terrigal and Avoca.

7. Caves Beach, Lake Macquarie

Location: 1.5 hours north of Sydney

Why We Love It: Known for its sea caves and golden sand. The off leash area south of the Surf Life Saving Club is perfect for exploring and swimming.

Stay Nearby: Pet friendly Airbnbs with ocean views are easy to find.

8. Nobbys Beach, Newcastle

Location: Newcastle

Vibe: Surf town fun

Why We Love It: Newcastle’s most iconic beach has an off leash section between Nobbys Road and Fort Scratchley. Plenty of space for running and wave chasing.

Local Tip: Visit The Autumn Rooms café nearby for a dog friendly brunch.

9. One Mile Beach, Forster

Location: Mid North Coast

Vibe: Wide and wild

Why We Love It: A long open beach that feels untouched. The northern end is off leash and perfect for dogs who love to sprint and splash.

Pro Tip: Stay at a nearby pet friendly holiday park for easy access.

10. Belongil Beach, Byron Bay

Location: Northern NSW

Vibe: Laid back and free spirited

Why We Love It: Byron’s most famous dog beach. Dogs can roam off leash north of Manfred Street to the Main Beach car park. Expect calm surf and friendly locals.

Pro Tip: Early morning swims are the best for dolphin spotting.

11. Seven Mile Beach, Lennox Head

Location: Near Ballina

Vibe: Peaceful and expansive

Why We Love It: Off leash areas are marked at the northern end. Great for long walks and quiet swims with your dog. The dunes create a natural windbreak.

Stay Nearby: Plenty of coastal cottages and pet friendly stays.

12. Cabarita Beach, Tweed Coast

Location: Far North NSW

Vibe: Coastal paradise

Why We Love It: Pristine sand, turquoise water, and leash free zones south of Norries Headland. It’s ideal for adventurous dogs who love to dig and play in the surf.
